Senate Greenlights Legislation to Release Epstein Files

The upper chamber of Congress on this Tuesday passed without delay to a bill that will require the publication of official records related to the deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, after a overwhelming vote in the lower house and a reversal by the president and his GOP allies. Trump's team relented after an extended period of trying to delay the cross-party initiative involving a case that has dogged the president since his return to the White House.

Unanimous Approval in Congress

The Senate acted by general agreement, which requires approval from each senator but does not require a recorded vote, expediting the process. Hours earlier, the House passed by a huge margin the bill on a near-unanimous vote.

Citizens have been patient long enough. Those affected have waited patiently,” Chuck Schumer declared in a floor speech on Tuesday, before urging the Senate to adopt it by consent. “Uncover the facts. Ensure full disclosure.”

Future Action

The bill next goes to Donald Trump for his endorsement. He stated on the previous day that he would sign the measure.

Although Trump has for an extended period rejected the outcry over the official management of the investigation as a “political stunt”, he voiced approval for the legislation over the past few days, and stated he would sign the measure if it comes to him.

Response

Opposition lawmakers, along with victims and their representatives who were present in a viewing area, applauded after the bill was enacted. Lone dissent came from Clay Higgins, who expressed concern he worried the measure would disclose personal information of people, persons of interest and others implicated in the investigation.
