European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
