A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” declared the head of state.
The official announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in national projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party demanded an prompt halt in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national undertakings.
